Publication on national commitments on AFOLU LEDS
Date: 6 December 2015
Time: 11.30 – 12.00
Venue: Pavilion D Nature and Climate Change, Level 2 – Hall Maillot
Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) represents 20-24% of the global GHG emissions in 2010 and is particularly important in Asia, where the largest proportion of global AFOLU emissions during 1990-2010 originated. To understand the current role AFOLU is expected to play in mitigation compared to potential for emission reduction from the sector, the Low Emission Development Strategies Global Partnership (LEDS GP)’s AFOLU Working Group has commissioned a paper that analyzes how AFOLU is included in INDCs and national development plans and strategies of selected countries in Asia (including Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Thailand and Vietnam) and how this compares with countries’ emission profiles. Peatland management in Southeast Asia
Date: 6 December 2015
Time: 15.00 – 15.30
Venue: Pavilion D Nature and Climate Change, Level 2 – Hall Maillot
Southeast Asia has more than 60% of the world’s tropical peatlands covering about 25 million hectares. These peatlands are critical in regulating global climate, conserving biodiversity and sustaining water resources and local livelihoods. However, many peatlands in the region are being affected by exploitation and unsustainable management practices. Large scale peatland drainage and conservation is responsible for much of the fires and transboundary haze which is one of the most serious regional environmental problems in SEA. The ASEAN Member States endorsed the establishment of a long term multi-stakeholder ASEAN Programme for Sustainable Management of Peatlands Ecosystems (2014-2020) (APSMPE) in September 2013. The APSMPE supports collaboration between different stakholders (including government, private sector, communities and civil society) in the ASEAN region to achieve the goals of the ASEAN Peatland Management Strategy 2006-2020. Climate smart landscapes: Key ingredients for impact at scale
Date: 6 December 2015
Time: 15.45 – 16.30
Venue: Pavilion D Nature and Climate Change, Level 2 – Hall Maillot
In this session we will explore what are some of the key ingredients and practical examples of working on a climate smart landscape approach. In particular the need: (i) to work with multiple stakeholders to develop and implement programmes and strategies for low emission, climate resilient landscape development; (ii) to develop strategies for multi-functional climate smart landscapes that combine food production, biodiversity conservation, other land uses and the maintenance of ecosystem services; (ii) to involve a wide range of stakeholders, including business, in this process by facilitating inclusive public-private-producer partnerships; and (iii) to access innovative financing and engage with companies to unlock private investment. These four complimentary areas of work need to be applied as a package in order to achieve long lasting impacts at scale. Find more information here.
Tackling complexity in forest and landscape restoration – a best practices sharing session
Date: 6 December 2015
Time: 17:35‐18:20
Venue: Pavilion D Nature and Climate Change, Level 2 – Hall Maillot
Immense benefits for climate change objectives can be derived from forest and landscape restoration. However, for putting landscape‐based restoration into practice, a better understanding of the challenges, opportunities and impacts on human livelihoods involved is needed. This panel discussion aims at enhancing the understanding – among professionals and decisionmakers ‐ of the complex mix of aspects and factors to be taken into account for a successful implementation of forest and landscape restoration and management.
