Biomass has the potential of becoming an important source of clean energy in Latin America and the Caribbean. However, in many countries, the extended use of biomass obtained non-sustainably and using inefficient technologies is an indicator of energy poverty, while in others, the abundant residues from forestry and agricultural activities are wasted and become an environmental problem.

As with other renewable energy sources, the full development of the biomass energy potential requires a clear and consistent policy framework.  In this case, however, adequate policymaking goes beyond the energy authorities, as it requires a high degree of coordination and coherence between energy, environment, forestry and agricultural policy makers.

This webinar will provide an overview of the opportunities and challenges for biomass use for energy production in the region. It will feature a case study on the Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action (NAMA) from Probiomasa in Argentina as an example of the measures necessary to overcome the barriers to the long-term development the bioenergy sector.
