LEDS GP is being rebranded as the Global Climate Action Partnership (GCAP)

Dear LEDS GP Members,

LEDS GP is being rebranded as the Global Climate Action Partnership (GCAP)

In 2021, the Low Emission Development Strategies Global Partnership (LEDS GP) celebrated its 10-year anniversary since its inception in 2011. Members across countries from all regions actively drive this vibrant network and its high value activities, including developing and piloting
innovative solutions, sharing learnings, collaborating on projects, participating in capacity building activities, and taking leadership roles in various forums. Over the last decade, the LEDS GP grew to over 4,500 practitioners from 120 countries and made a big impact by helping to strengthen over 275 climate policies and measures across member countries, providing technical assistance and peer learning to train practitioners, disseminate knowledge, and increase capacity.

LEDS GP leaders from around the world have taken a fresh look at the partnership’s mission and determined that the time is right to reassess priorities and rebrand the partnership based upon a shift in emphasis. After soliciting member feedback and receiving guidance from the global steering committee, the LEDS GP will be rebranded as the ‘Global Climate Action Partnership’ (GCAP). To guide this rebranding, a planning document has been developed that sets the strategic vision of the partnership through 2025 based upon an active consultative process with members. This strategic vision and rebranding will strengthen support for implementation of near-term climate goals and actions that pave the way toward development of longer-term resilient, just, and inclusive low emission and net zero (where appropriate) economies. While the network will continue to support countries with planning processes and pathways toward decarbonization, a greater emphasis will be given to implementation activities which include enabling policies and regulatory frameworks, technical projects, investment mobilization, and governance structures. As part of the focus on climate action and implementation, the network will continue to strengthen its inclusive approach by actively engaging a variety of stakeholders representing government, civil society, the private sector, youth groups, and other non-state actors.

To support this rebranding initiative, the GCAP is also launching a new ‘Council of Climate Leaders’, composed of government officials from developing countries to help inform and steer GCAP activities, and to provide recommendations to the Steering Committee and Secretariat. Channels for direct feedback from all members will remain open and this Council will complement input received directly from the members.

We expect to launch the new branding and GCAP’s Council of Climate Leaders at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) in November. In the interim, the regional
platforms in Africa, Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean will continue to use their existing branding while emphasizing implementation support on pathways toward inclusive and resilient low emission and net zero transitions. Rebranding these regional platforms may be considered in the future.

We are excited to continue our strong collaboration with countries across the globe in supporting your climate and development priorities and learning from―and being inspired by― your ongoing leadership actions. We welcome any questions or feedback you may have on this rebranding, strategic emphasis, and Leadership Council by email at secretariat@old.globalclimateactionpartnership.org.

Kind regards,

Ron Benioff
